AI writing tools make it easy to publish more content, faster. They also make it easy to publish a lot of very similar, thin content that search engines can spot as low-value — or worse, output that quietly includes fabricated statistics or links you never intended to include. The tools aren’t the problem; publishing their output without review is.

Where AI Content Goes Wrong

The most common failure mode isn’t obviously bad writing — it’s plausible-sounding writing that’s wrong or empty. Invented statistics presented as fact, generic advice repeated across multiple posts with different titles, and citations or outbound links that were never verified. We’ve seen this firsthand: several posts on this very site were published this way, covering nearly identical ground under different titles, with statistics that don’t trace back to any real source. Search engines increasingly recognise this pattern, and it hurts the whole site’s credibility, not just the individual posts.

What Actually Works

Used well, AI tools are genuinely useful for a first draft, for restructuring existing knowledge, or for handling repetitive formatting work. What separates useful output from a liability is what happens after generation: a human who knows the subject reviews every factual claim, checks every link actually goes somewhere relevant and trustworthy, and confirms the piece says something a reader couldn’t get from ten other near-identical articles.

A Simple Review Standard

Before publishing anything AI-assisted, three questions are worth asking: Is every statistic or claim something you could point to a real source for? Does this article cover ground your site hasn’t already covered, or is it a rewrite of something you published last month? And would you be comfortable if a client asked where a specific claim came from? If the answer to any of those is no, it needs editing before it goes live.

Why This Matters for SEO Specifically

Search engines evaluate content for genuine expertise and trustworthiness, not just keyword coverage. A site with many near-duplicate, unreviewed AI posts sends the opposite signal — and can drag down how search engines evaluate the rest of the site’s content, including pages that were written carefully. Quality control on AI-assisted content isn’t optional if you care about rankings.
